Primers and sealers set up everything that follows - adhesion to the substrate, tannin and stain blocking, and a sandable base that lets the topcoat lay down flat. Choose by substrate and problem: bare wood, previously finished surfaces, or tannin-prone species that bleed through white finishes. White cabinet work over oak, walnut, or knotty species almost always wants the tannin-blocking primer, while clear-over-stain schedules can often run self-sealing on the topcoat alone. When in doubt about an unknown existing finish, an isolator between old and new is cheap insurance.
